CONNECTICUT 1637 / REMEMBRANCE COLLECTION

ASCEND TEE'S

Connecticut 1637 — a remembrance line for the National Day of Mourning. Every piece is made to order.

In 1637, the Pequot War reached its darkest day at Mystic. This line remembers. Printed and embroidered pieces carry the same designs in two crafts.

SINCE 1970 — COLE'S HILL, PLYMOUTH, MASSACHUSETTS

National Day of Mourning

While most of the country gathers around a table, Native communities gather on a hill in Plymouth — as they have since 1970 — for a day of remembrance, truth-telling, and protest. This line was designed for that day.

1637 — The Massacre at Mystic

In May 1637, English colonists and their allies surrounded the Pequot fort at Mystic and set it ablaze. Hundreds of Pequot people — men, women, and children — were killed. Colonial authorities then proclaimed a day of thanksgiving for the victory. That is the ground this line stands on.

1970 — The Speech They Buried

Wampanoag leader Wamsutta Frank James was invited to speak at Plymouth's 350th anniversary — until officials read his speech and demanded he soften it. He refused. On Thanksgiving Day 1970, Native people gathered on Cole's Hill instead, and the National Day of Mourning was born.

Today — Every Fourth Thursday

It is not a public holiday. Every Thanksgiving at noon, Indigenous people and supporters still gather on Cole's Hill above Plymouth Rock — to honor their ancestors, to tell the truth about what followed the landing, and to protest the racism Native people continue to face. Remembrance is the point.

Thanksgiving is a story. 1637 is the history.

Every piece below carries that history — printed or embroidered, made to order.
